FARMERS IN ADJUMANI CAUTIONED AGAINST TOXIC AGROCHEMICALS.

Official from the Adjumani District Natural Resources and Production department have cautioned farmers against the continued use of toxic agrochemicals, citing serious risk to the environment and public.
The warning was issued during the review of the 2015 district production and marketing ordinance held on 7th May 2026 in the Natural Resources Department Boardroom.
Lagu Charles Vini, the District Agricultural Officer, said with guidance from the 2007 Agrochemicals Act, necessary measures would be taken to secure the environment before it was too late.
He also stressed that enforcement of existing laws would be prioritized to curb the circulation of banned and counterfeit products in local markets.
Senior CDO, Stalin Solomon Mawadri, also noted the deteriorating condition of local water bodies and rising levels of contamination affecting surrounding communities.
On his part, Katongole Derrick, the UNHCR focal point person for Livelihood and Environment, argued that exploitation of refuges on land access in on the rise and urged the district to address further calling for improved market preservatives.
’’I am told tomatoes are preserved using mortuary preservatives, equally meat, which is contrary to the law’’.
Okuonzi Peter, the District Fisheries Officer, said law defaulters pertaining to exploitation of aquaculture shall be penalized with a minimum jail term of 8yrs and a fine in Ugandan shillings of twenty currency.
